10 Simple Marketing Lessons [Infographic]
“Marketing is the process of communicating the value of a product or service to customers. It is a critical business function for attracting customers.” (Wikipedia.org)
The function of Marketing is not simple. There is a never ending stream of information to Create, Implement, and Track. In addition, the job of marketing is always changing. Unlike it’s close cousin sales, that always stays the same.
Perhaps these Marketing Lessons can assist you in keeping your marketing plan current, relevant and effective.
1. Quality is the best advertising
“Give them quality,” Milton Hershey said. “That’s the best kind of advertising in the world.”
Marketing becomes very simple when people are trying to find your product.
2. Form an emotional connection
“Relying too much on proof distracts you from the real mission–which is emotional connection.” ~ Seth Godin
I have heard it said that people do not buy what they need they buy what they want. People buy off of their emotions, about how a product makes them feel.
3. Measure Your Marketing
“Good marketers measure. “ ~ Seth Godin
Analytics, Insights, A/B Testing, Heatmaps, Statistics, Surveys, Case Studies, Conversions, it is pretty easy to measure your marketing efforts.
4. Nothing happens without promotion
(PT) “Barnum became known as the Shakespeare of Advertising, due to his innovative and impressive ideas. He knew how to draw patrons in, by giving them a glimpse of something that had never been seen before. “Without promotion something terrible happens… Nothing!” he once said.” (wikipedia.org)
Write a blog post, then do nothing. See how many social shares and comments it gets… none. You need to promote your marketing.
5. Be people driven
“The most successful communication is devoutly audience focused. Motivating the right people with authentic, value packed content in a relatable way makes great marketing.” ~ Georgiana Laudi
Communicate your marketing like you were communicating to a friend, but without cussing.
6. Understand the customer
“The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well the product or service fits him and sells itself.” ~ Peter Drucker
Can you think of a product that people know they want to buy without talking to a sales person? Just from the marketing alone you know you want that product?
7. Reposition weaknesses to strengths
“Truly brilliant marketing happens when you take something most people think of as a weakness and reposition it so people think of it as a strength.” ~ Reed Hastings (money.cnn.com)
For example if you run a blog you will have to create content. Creating content generates leads. Start blogging to generate leads.
8. Write about the problem/solutions
“Focus on the core problem your business solves & put out lots of content & enthusiasm, & ideas about how to solve that problem” ~ Laura Fitton
This is very much like tell stories that focus on the benefits of your product and not the features. For example: This car has airbags, is a feature. This car will safely protect your family in a 30 MPH collision, is a benefit.
9. Market like prospects shop
“To be successful and grow your business and revenues, you must match the way you market your products with the way your prospects learn about and shop for your products.” ~ Brian Halligan
If your customers are Democrat, it probably would not pay off to market on the FOX Network.
10. Be creative and experiment
“Don’t be afraid to get creative and EXPERIMENT with your marketing.” – Mike Volpe
Just make sure that you measure your marketing.
