Hiring an SEO Company can be quite Intimidating.
If you read my 3 Google Page Rank Mistakes post then this may seem redundant. However, there are just so many different ways that people sell SEO Services. Some of the different companies that I have run across to offer SEO as a Service are less than legitimate. It is not that they are not going to do the work that they tell you that they will do. It is just that the work that they are going to do will offer very little value to the overall internet marketing strategy of the average small to medium sized business.
The Best example of this that I have seen is a Company that will simply place your business in the Google Places Registry for a fee and call that SEO. While it is true that it does offers some SEO Value, and that if your business is not registered with Google Places that could cost you some business. That alone is not what I consider an SEO Company.
An SEO Company may Offer:
- SEO Tools
- SEO Software
- SEO Plugins
- SEO Training
- SEO eBooks
- SEO Services
- SEO Monitoring
And within each of these categories are many sub categories.
What Inspired This Post
I was on Facebook yesterday and I saw an SEO Company make a boast about SEO results they had achieved for their client. The boast was that a particular keyword ( used to retrieve documents in an information system, for instance, a catalog or a search engine. A popular form of keywords on the web are tags which are directly visible and can be assigned by non-experts also. Index terms can consist of a word, phrase, or alphanumerical term. wikipedia.com) was ranking #1 on Google.
While this sounds pretty cool, and his client was probably impressed with this when they saw it, what does it mean?

It means that if a person goes to the Google Search Engine Page and enters that particular keyword phrase into the search bar then his clients website would be the First Organic (or Non Paid) website option to click on. Awesome Right?
Well not so fast. This will only be beneficial if the keyword phrase is one that MANY people search for on a monthly basis. Because if no one is searching for a Keyword Phrase that you rank #1 for then no one will know that you are #1, which means that no one will click the link to your Website.
How Many People Searched For The Keyword That This SEO Company Was So Proud Was #1 On Google?
NONE! No one searches for that keyword phrase. So who cares if it is #1 on Google.
Don’t let your SEO Company fool you into thinking they are providing you and your business with some value, just because you are on the first page of Google or Bing. Tell them that is great, then ask them how many people search for that Keyword on a monthly basis. And if you are not a National company, ask how many local people are searching for that Keyword.
