Is A Faster Loading WordPress Website Your New Years Resolution?

faster loading wordpress websites

User’s want a faster loading WordPress website.  It was not long ago that Shared Hosting with a particular large Hosting Company was adequate for most websites with regular to low traffic… that is most of my clients.

Then if that shared hosting environment wasn’t giving them enough goose, we could do some caching, image optimization, and CDN work to get it up to speed.

I don’t know if it is just me but… it seems like this particular hosting company started to cram their servers when they merged with another hosting company and now they are both slow.

I had been starting to experiment with new servers for my wordpress website and have tested my Jason Fox Blog on 3 different WordPress Specific Hosting Companies.

  1. DreamPress
  2. WP Engine
  3. SiteGround

My website is pretty code, image, and content heavy and takes some serious power to get fired up quickly.  My Loading Times:

  • Shared Hosting:  9 seconds
  • DreamPress: 3.6 seconds
  • WP Engine: 1.6 seconds
  • SiteGround: 1.8 seconds

You can test your site loading speed here:  Pingdom Website Speed Test

I will start with DreamPress a Beta WordPress Specific Hosting Branch of DreamHost.

While I understand they are still in a Beta, I would not recommend you use this service.

The price is basically the same as other Premium WordPress Hosting providers.  The service was not sufficient for me.  In addition the site was much faster than the shared hosting environment, but not as fast as the other premium hosts.

Starting Price:  $24 month

Special Intro Price:  $19.95

WP Engine

I do contract work for a few marketing agencies and have built 20+ websites on these servers.

I love this company.

I think they are the fastest of the sites that I have tested.  Their service is pretty good.  You have to use their ticket system… no phone support.  In addition they offer a ton of reference material to help you with things like site migration, and domain mapping, but they do not do it for you.

The 2nd biggest perk of using a Premium WordPress Hosting company is that they manage your server area for you… meaning you don’t need to worry about things like WordPress Updates, Backing Up Your Site, and Security.  They take care of all that for you.

Like most of the hosting companies you would use for a faster loading wordpress website they do not offer email services.

 Starting Price: $29 month

Now through the end of the year:  Sign up for an annual plan and save 30% on hosting!

This is where my Jason Fox Website currently sits and probably where I will keep it… because I am cheap.

I would definitely recommend this company.

I don’t think they are quite as fast as WP Engine but if you don’t need the best this hosting company is very good and affordable.

Their service is very strong and they do offer 24/7 phone support.  In addition if you are not comfortable with website migrations and domain mapping… its ok because they do that for you.

In addition they offer a CPanel and Email that many of the other Wodpress Hosting companies do not offer.

Starting Price:  $9.95

If you want a Faster Loading WordPress Website chances are you will need to upgrade your hosting provider.

Honestly I just don’t think any of the shared hosting environments can handle WordPress Websites, and no longer will build wordpress websites on them.

There are a handful of other Premium WordPress Hosting companies that I have not tried. After reading reviews they seemed like knockoffs of WP Engine, and I have had so much of my own positive experience with them I would just rather use them.

I would not recommend DreamPress.  I would definitely recommend either WP Engine or SiteGround depending on what you are looking for.

I think for pure performance WP Engine is the best, but SiteGround is very good and offers more features for less.
