The What, Why, and How of Real Estate Website Mobile Design

The average US Adult spends about 5 hours a month using the internet on their smart phone, not including apps.


According to a Neilsen survey, “…US adults spent on average 34 hours per month using the mobile internet on smartphones. By comparison, they spend 27 hours on the PC internet,”  as reported on Marketing Land

They go on to point out that, “of that smart phone internet time, apps capture 86 percent of usage. Only 14 percent of smart phone internet access time comes via the mobile web.”

That means that most of the time spent on mobile devices is using apps… for real estate this means:  Redfin, Zillow, Trulia, and

We can not compete with this or change it.  And I don’t believe that having your own app as a practical solution… we need to let that go.  For now.

Is 5 Hours a Month Worth It?

Let’s look at another statistic:  The main reason that people use Google is to search for businesses that they already know.

“For researching purposes, mobile web is still preferred” (Ericcson)

What I know from my own Mobile Use Experience is that the majority of the time that I use my Mobile Devices on the web (not an app) is to search on Google.  To search for my restaurants, my mechanic, my gym, my kids school, my massage therapist, my Real Estate Agent??

I personally have become annoyed by the results that I have received that are not Mobile Friendly and have not used their services that day.

If so… then you know that the 5 hours a month is worth it to have a mobile design for your real estate website.

In addition, as the Infographic points out, a mobile user may never download a native app, but is Highly unlikely that they will never use the mobile web.
