What Does the Fox Say? “Should Your Business Make A Viral Video?”

I found this video by reading a Blog Subscription Email from Seth Godin. (By the way, people do read other people’s blog.) In his post Seth makes the point that while this video is pretty decent and has gotten Millions of views… what does that mean for business?

It is no secret that video is a strong Internet Marketing strategy. (If it is a secret, let me be the first to tell you. Video on the Internet is HUGE!) Even as a Marketing Strategy for small business, and Real Estate Marketing. Why?

1. Over 50% of the time on the internet is spent watching video
2. Studies show that people will spend more time watching your video than reading your text.
3. If your leads are watching you on video… they are getting to know you before you ever meet.

Should Your Business Make A Viral Video?

I have seen marketer’s and videographer’s advertise that they can build you a viral video. I don’t know how anybody could advertise that… while there is a suedo formula for making videos go viral, what does that mean for your business.

Let’s look at this video.

  1. If you hired someone to make a video like this it would be expensive.
  2. Would you want a video like this representing your business?

“If your work goes viral, if it gets seen by tens of millions of people, sure you can profit from that. But most of the time, it won’t. Most of the time, you’ll aim to delight the masses and you’ll fail.

I’m glad that some people are busy trying to entertain us in a silly way now and then. But it doesn’t have to be you doing the entertaining–the odds are stacked against you.

So much easier to aim for the smallest possible audience, not the largest, to build long-term value among a trusted, delighted tribe, to create work that matters and stands the test of time.” (Seth Godin)

I agree, your video does not need to get a million hits to be effective. It does not have to have a catchy hook to be effective, and you do not need to dress up like farm animals for your blog video’s to be effective.

Do make video for your business and do a good job… but focus on your audience, your sphere of influence, and don’t worry about being the next Psy
