Build a Real Estate WordPress Website with IDX (Step-by-Step Guide)

Build Your Own Real Estate Website
(Step-by-Step)

If you want to build it yourself, this guide walks you through everything. If not, we can build it for you.

Most real estate websites don’t work. Here’s why yours will.

Most agents focus on design.
The ones who win build systems.

Generate

Capture leads with forms, landing pages, and IDX tools.

Legitimize

Make you look like the professional you already are.

Authority

Build trust before you ever speak to a client.

Multiply

Give you a place to publish, share, and syndicate your content.

Residence

Create a permanent home base for your marketing that you own and control.

Choose Your Domain Name

I Have a Domain Name

Before you point your domain to your website be sure to check with your Local MLS to make sure that it does not break any rules.
Try to keep your domain name short, simple, and easy to spell.
It is best if it has your name business name in it, but it is not required.
Try to use .com extensions
It is not important to have keywords in your domain.

I Need a Domain Name

Research Name Availability and purchase your domain name.

Start Your Domain Search

Once you get your WordPress website all set up you will come back to the domain to “Launch The Site“.

Website Hosting

NOT ALL HOSTING PROVIDERS ARE CREATED EQUAL

Your website needs a place to live—and not all hosting providers are created equal.
There are a lot of hosting companies out there. On the surface, many of them look the same. They’re not. Cheap hosting often leads to slow load times, downtime, security issues, and problems with IDX integrations.
I’ve worked with most of the popular hosting providers over the years. Some are fine. Many I would not recommend.
For real estate WordPress websites, especially with IDX, I consistently recommend:

WP Engine

Starting around $30/month, annually at about $350/year

WP Engine is my preferred hosting recommendation for agents who are serious about building a real estate marketing engine. It is managed WordPress hosting built for speed, security, backups, staging, CDN performance, and expert WordPress support. It costs more than basic hosting, but it gives you a stronger foundation for IDX, content, lead capture, and long term search visibility.

SiteGround

Intro around $2.99/month, renews around $17.99/month

SiteGround is my budget friendly recommendation if you are not ready for premium managed hosting yet. The StartUp plan works well for a single website and includes SSL, CDN, backups, email, caching, security features, and WordPress tools. Just pay attention to the renewal price. The intro price is attractive, but the real cost goes up after the first term.

If you’re serious about your website actually working—loading fast, staying secure, and handling IDX correctly—this is not the place to cut corners.

WordPress.org

Good news. This part is easy.
When you sign up for a quality hosting provider like WP Engine or SiteGround, WordPress is already set up for you or can be installed with one click.
You don’t need to download anything or mess with files.

Once WordPress is installed, this becomes your control center where you’ll manage:

  • Pages
  • Blog Posts
  • Plugins
  • IDX
  • Images and Content

Business Logo

I HAVE A CUSTOM LOGO

You’re ahead of the game.
Make sure you have your logo in:

→ PNG
→ JPG
→ Vector or PDF

Your logo will guide the design of your website, including colors, fonts, and overall style.

I NEED A CUSTOM LOGO

You don’t need a complicated logo—you need a clean, usable one.
Options:

→ Fiverr Pro or Upwork (best for custom work)
→ Looka or Brandmark (fast and affordable)
→ 99designs (good for exploring multiple ideas)

Start simple. You can always refine your brand later.

You are going to want to use the colors from your logo to design your website.

WordPress Theme

Your theme controls how your website looks, loads, and functions.
This is not something you want to overcomplicate.

For most real estate websites today, I recommend: Kadence Theme

Fast, lightweight, and built for the modern WordPress block editor. Kadence gives you:

  • Clean design without bloat
  • Strong mobile performance
  • Flexibility to build pages without custom coding
  • Long-term stability and updates
  • It’s the theme I recommend and use.
