Our Purple Premier 4: What We Still Love Years Later

Our Purple mattress in our bedroom, with the words “Our Purple Mattress Years Later” over the photo

We have had our Purple mattress for more than five years, and Sarah and I still compare other beds to it whenever we travel. More than once, one of us has said, “I can’t wait to get back to our mattress.”

How we chose it

Before Purple, we slept on an old Sealy pillow-top. It had been a good mattress, but it was time for a replacement. We went to four or five sleep shops and lay on what felt like 20 or 30 mattresses. We tried every Purple mattress in the store three times. Every time we visited another shop, we ended up drawn back to Purple.

The mattress we bought is a king-size Purple Premier 4. I had forgotten what the model was called until I checked the label on the bed. It was the nicest Purple we tried at the time. It is an older model, so I would not pretend the current Purple lineup is identical to ours.

What sleeping on it feels like

I like the way the bed holds you gently without that stuck, sinking feeling I get from some memory-foam mattresses. The combination of support and give is what keeps winning us over when we sleep somewhere else. If you want a memory-foam-like feel but dislike sinking deeply into the mattress, this is the quality I would look for when trying Purple in person.

We also bought an adjustable base. Sarah loves it more than I do: she raises it to read, watch TV, and work. I use it, but the mattress itself is the thing I miss most when we are away.

What has held up—and what has not been perfect

The bed has held up well overall. I weigh about 250 pounds, and there is some sagging on my side that is more noticeable than on Sarah’s. I also sleep warm, and this mattress sleeps a little warmer than I would prefer. Those are real tradeoffs, even though we still love sleeping on it.

We later added Purple pillows and sheets. The pillows support my neck and shoulders while still feeling soft against my ears and face. I use a king-size pillow; Sarah prefers a smaller one. I am not naming a specific pillow model here because I have not verified it from the pillow label.

The sheets feel soft, silky, a little stretchy, and substantial. The fitted sheet has enough depth and elastic to stay on the mattress, which I appreciate more than I expected. They have held up reasonably well, though I wish they wore a little more slowly.

Quick answers about our Purple mattress

Which Purple mattress do we own?

We have a king-size Purple Premier 4. It is an older model, so I would try the current Purple lineup in person rather than assume one of today’s models feels exactly like ours.

Does it sleep hot?

It sleeps a little warmer than I would prefer. I tend to sleep warm, so temperature is something I would pay attention to when trying it.

Has it sagged over time?

There is some sagging on my side, more than on Sarah’s. I weigh about 250 pounds. Even with that tradeoff, we still love sleeping on it.

Would I buy it again?

Yes. Not because it is flawless, but because after years of sleeping on it, we still look forward to coming home to this bed. I would visit a store and try the current models rather than assume one will feel exactly like our Premier 4. Spend enough time on each to notice both the support and the temperature. That is what helped us decide.
